Bartlesville, OK – Thursday, May 31, 2018
The first step in assessing and protecting against threats, to the long-term conservation of the Price Tower Arts Center, will be taken next week with a site visit by preservation expert Gunny Harboe. The Chicago architect will lead a comprehensive conservation management plan for the Frank Lloyd Wright building. The assessment is funded in part by a recent Getty Foundation grant, under their Keeping It Modern Initiative. Media are invited to a brief presentation Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., followed by an opportunity to tour behind-the-scenes of the iconic 19-story building.
“The Price Tower is a beautiful, architectural masterpiece designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, who the American Institute of Architects called the greatest American architect of all time,” says Price Tower’s Executive Director, Scott Ambler. “Our Mission is to preserve this Oklahoma jewel for our visitors to enjoy every day, just as Mr. Wright intended. But to ensure the Tower remains standing long after we are gone, we must pull back the curtain to expose what is not so attractive. During this process, we will assess the damages caused by Oklahoma’s harsh environment and the passage of time, and make plans to properly preserve our treasure for generations to come.”
The Price Tower Arts Center is recognized as historically and architecturally significant, not only in the United States, but across the globe. The Getty Foundation Keeping it Modern Initiative, granted $75,000 to the Price Tower Arts Center for this project, one of 12 sites in the world last year to receive this recognition. The Keeping it Modern Initiative is dedicated to saving mid-century modern architecture. The award puts the Price Tower and Bartlesville, Oklahoma on the same list as countries including Coventry Cathedral in England, Bauhaus Building in Germany, Melnikov House in Russia, Stadio Flaminio in Italy and Sidi Harazem Thermal Bath Complex in Morocco.
The Price Tower Arts Center, its hotel and restaurant, draws thousands of tourists (over 20,000 already this year) from around the world and nation annually, contributing to the local and state economy. It is a true treasure for the State of Oklahoma.
Public lecture about the project by Gunny Harboe to be held in the Price Tower gallery at 6pm, June 6.
Refreshments will be provided for this Media exclusive opportunity.
